INTRODUCTION TO THE CASE

 

Verify that there are no conflicts of interest

Ascertain the cause of action or claim

Assure it is within the scope of expertise

Memorialize the terms of the Investigation Agreement

 

 

 

GATHER INFORMATION

Establish the location, date and time of the event

Record relevant parties’ names and roles

Discover the "story"

Identify the issues to be investigated

Determine relevant codes, rules and standards

Review all available documentation

Perform a site investigation

 

 

 

ORGANIZE THE INFORMATION

Apply techniques consistent with the Scientific Method and the recommendations of NFPA 921 (Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigation)

 

Analyze the data in light of the relevant codes, rules and standards, and the context
of the event

 

 

 

FEEDBACK

Confer with the attorney or adjuster client to determine the direction of the case,

and if a written report will be required

 

 

 

TESTIFY

If required at deposition or trial, produce a report or presentation citing codes, rules and
standards, displaying captioned photos or video, offering and justifying conclusions
